Porto

I have just got back from 4 nights in Porto.  I went for a 3 day travel agent training extravaganza I met up with suppliers and attended training sessions from travel business experts,  here is my take on this city

Why Visit Porto?

Porto has this magical mix of old-world charm and modern vibrance. You can wander through colourful streets lined with azulejos (those beautiful blue-and-white tiles), hop on a boat down the Douro River, or sip a glass of port while watching the sunset over the iconic Dom Luís I Bridge.

It’s also refreshingly affordable compared to many European hotspots, making it a great choice if you want a stylish city break without the hefty price tag.

Best Time to Visit

Spring (April–June) and autumn (September–October) are ideal, with pleasant weather and fewer crowds. Summer is lively but busier, while winter offers a cozy, less touristy vibe.

Travel Tip

Wear comfy shoes – Porto is hilly, and the cobblestones can be slippery. And don’t rush it – the beauty of Porto is in soaking up the slow moments, whether that’s lingering over coffee in a tiled café or watching the boats glide down the Douro.

Must-See Highlights

  • Ribeira District: The heart of Porto, with winding streets, riverfront cafés, and pastel-coloured houses. Perfect for strolling and people-watching.

  • Dom Luís I Bridge: This double-deck iron bridge is one of Porto’s icons. Walk across for amazing views of both Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia.

  • Livraria Lello: One of the most beautiful bookshops in the world – it looks straight out of a fairytale. (Harry Potter fans, this is a must!)

  • Port Wine Cellars: Cross the river into Vila Nova de Gaia for tours and tastings. The cellars are legendary.

  • Clérigos Tower & Church: Climb the 225 steps for panoramic views over the city’s terracotta rooftops.

So whether you’re after history, food, or just a gorgeous city to wander in, Porto has a way of stealing hearts.  It’s also a popular start point for river cruising
